Fiscal Failure

     Romney's camp often points to his fiscal record as governor of Massachusetts as the best reason for conservatives to support him. Social issues don't matter, they argue (and in doing so ignore their own party's history), it's the economy that matters now. While this argument would be insufficient even if it were true, it is patently obvious that it is false and misleading after even the most rudimentary examination. A table comparing Romney claims to reality is presented below.

Mitt Romney's Job Creation Record

     Mitt Romney seems to be doing his best to ignore social issues and focus on his alleged business savvy. Unfortunately his record as governor of Massachusetts contradicts his claims, as Massachusetts ranked close to last in job creation throughout his time as governor, while post-Romney Massachusetts is consistently among the top states in job creation.       If we attempt to ignore social issues in order to focus on economic issues alone we will have nothing better than unprincipled egomaniacs like Mitt Romney who will give us conservatism in neither area.

Mitt Romney: Bad for the Economy

     During Romney's time as governor Massachusetts ranked 47th out of 50 states in job creation. The Cato Institute gave him an "F" in job creation, a "D" in spending, an "F" in entitlements and growing government, an "F" in health insurance costs (total spending on health insurance increased by $8.569 billion in RomneyCare's first five years), an "F" on Cap and Trade, an "F" on the Wall Street bailouts, and an "F" on raising taxes. By my count that's six F's and a D! Where I come from, that's failing. Not only is Romney unprincipled and thoughtless on social issues, he can't even get the economy right! Let's not give him a chance to do to America what he did to Massachusetts!
